What Is Midjourney?
Midjourney is the AI image generator that went viral in 2022 and has maintained its position as the aesthetic quality leader through 2026. Unlike most AI tools, Midjourney operates primarily through Discord (with a web interface that's still catching up), and has built one of the most active creative communities in tech.
How Midjourney Works
Midjourney uses a diffusion model — it starts with random noise and progressively removes that noise guided by your text prompt, until a coherent image emerges. The model was trained on billions of image-text pairs scraped from the web (a contentious choice) and fine-tuned on curated datasets to achieve Midjourney's distinctive aesthetic quality.
V7 introduced Character References (--cref) — a secondary conditioning mechanism that encodes a reference image's visual features separately from the text prompt, enabling consistent characters across multiple generations. This solves a fundamental challenge in AI image generation that earlier versions handled poorly.
